Now that BRIC has become BRICS, we are revising which languages you should consider when buying document translations for these particular countries.

Firstly, Brazil, with a population of around 191 million (July 2008 est.). Brazil is well-developed within agricultural, mining, manufacturing and service sectors, which are expanding rapidly in world markets.  Major industries include textiles, shoes, chemicals, cement, lumber, iron ore, tin, steel, aircraft, motor vehicles and parts, other machinery and equipment.

Portuguese is the official language.  It’s important to emphasize that it is Brazilian Portuguese which is spoken in Brazil.  Why is this important? The spelling, verb, tenses and terminology vary between European and Brazilian Portuguese.  The choice of words can sometimes be completely different especially for technical documents.

Trading between UK and Brazil is still low but they have formed a strong trading partnership with China, and the US.  [China 12.49%, US 10.5%, Argentina 8.4%, Netherlands 5.39%, Germany 4.05% (2009)]
